McDonald Observatory – Texas

The McDonald Observatory is located near Fort Davis, Texas. With its 11-meter (433-inch) mirror, the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) is one of the world’s largest optical telescopes.

We attended both the Twilight Program and the Star Party. There is a fee for both events. While it is recommended to get tickets to the Star Party, we were able to get it.

The Twilight Program is held indoors and in our case the program was “Modeling the Night Sky.” Using audience members, the program highlighted the way objects move in our solar system and where they appear in the night sky.

The Star Party entailed viewing the night sky through a number of outdoor telescopes. Star Parties are approximately 2 hours in length. Dress warmly, the program takes place outdoors. Highly recommended to make your reservations ahead of time.
